Renewing Without Shopping? Why Comparing Your Options Pays Off

Renewing the plan you already know can feel like the easiest choice. But a new year is a good moment to check whether the coverage still matches your needs and budget. A short comparison can help you understand what is changing and whether another option deserves a closer look.

Marketplace open enrollment begins November 1, 2026, and runs through January 15, 2027. If you currently have Marketplace coverage, make time to review your renewal information and compare available plans. If you have private coverage or are uninsured, you can still ask what other options may be available.

Your life and your plan may have changed

Think about what is different since your last enrollment. Has your household changed? Did you move, change jobs, or adjust how you work? Are your preferred doctors, prescriptions, or care priorities the same? Even if your answers are mostly unchanged, plan premiums, networks, and coverage details may differ from one year to the next.

Look at more than the premium. Review deductibles, copayments, coinsurance, out-of-pocket limits, provider networks, prescription coverage, and any conditions or limits that matter to you. Compare the written plan details, and ask for clarification where needed. A familiar name is not a substitute for checking the current terms.

Do not leave a meaningful option unexplored

People sometimes assume they have to wait for Marketplace open enrollment to think about all health coverage. American Trustee private plans can be started outside the November 1 to January 15 Marketplace window in every state we serve. We offer plans in 27 states. You can ask about private options now, before open enrollment begins. Plan availability, eligibility, and effective dates depend on the specific plan and individual circumstances.

Private plans may be priced meaningfully lower than comparable Marketplace plans in some situations, but the price alone is not the whole comparison. Actual savings vary by age, health, location, and plan. Benefits, provider access, cost-sharing, and eligibility can differ. If financial assistance may affect your Marketplace premium, factor that into your review as well.

It is also entirely possible that your current coverage remains the right fit. Shopping is not a commitment to change. It is a chance to check that you understand the choices and can explain why the plan you select works for you.

Make a low-pressure annual check-in

Set aside a few minutes to write down what matters most this year. Bring your questions about monthly cost, doctors, prescriptions, benefits, and timing. Ask for a side-by-side explanation and take time to review the details before making a decision.
